Oscar Nominations: 99 Problems But Racism Ain’t One

In the eighteenth century, the biggest problem America was facing was racism. And some other but this was one of the biggest. There were slaves and there were native Americans and so on. Nowadays, the political correctness and anti-racism movements are still being of the highest importance in the States. It is so ridiculously important, it started to piss off people who aren’t racist at all. You gotta agree with me here. Watching a film from the 80s or 90s, hearing all the swearing and the n-words in the TV at noon – this isn’t films today. Culture went so far in this fight, it began to be exasperating.

So let’s take a step back in history. Culture does not exist if the needs from the Maslow’s pyramid aren’t fulfilled. Approximately. Without actually acting, the sole telling about it wouldn’t matter. Culture has a subject and it usually doesn’t cover the actual culture (it does, sure, but let’s face it, films about the real world still win). I hope it’s clear enough.

Lumiere Brothers Workers Leaving The Factory (1895)

Ever since the film business started, the filmmakers focused on the subjects close to them. Here we are with Lumiere’s “Workers leaving the factory” or “Battleship Potemkin” by Eisenstein. If history didn’t happen, the subjects wouldn’t exist. Here I’m talking about films, but the same goes with Captain America fighting Nazi in Marvel Comics and so on.

This is why I cannot blame the Academy for the nominations. We face the biggest politically correct war ever, not only in the case of racism but also homophobia and other inequality of minorities. Culture is created also to comment the world and this is exactly what the members of the Academy are doing – highlighting the problem. With the most vibrant colour, they possibly can.

In my personal life, I believe in equality but I am also aware that I was lucky to be raised in that kind of environment. I can give so many examples of people who didn’t. And the whole thing is precisely for them.

I agree that awards should be given to people that are exceptional. I agree that kind of behaviour makes people more worthy of the award missing their spot. I agree it is unfair. But I also think this is not just to award who should but also who will make a difference.

Did Oscars become too political? Yes. 100%.

It’s not a shock for any of you, I guess. But then, we live in a different world now. In today’s world, most of us can afford watching films at home or going to a cinema. Back in a day, it was merely possible to watch all the nominated pictures. The winner should have been the film worth the audience to see. Think about it. Who doesn’t watch a film every week or so? Who doesn’t have a TV, Netflix or even a cinema nearby to see things? Most of the people who care about the awards do. (Putting poverty and linked issues would be too much so let’s don’t go there.)

Roma is not in the best film category just because it is good. It is Mexican. And it couldn’t be breaking boundaries more than it does already. In the 91 years, there were only eight non-English speaking films nominated in the most important category. None of them won, but here we are on the edge of this era. I truly believe Roma should score it. It is an incredible film and it is a film that is very important to the American audience. The most important cultural event will once again stand and show their statement.

Black Panther? I am the biggest hater of this idea, but I get it. It is not a film worthy of the spot. I can give you plenty of titles that are more suitable there. But this is the Academy fighting racism. This is Disney promoting Black Panther since Captain America: Civil War to become exactly that. Is it fair? Again, no. I wish so much I had enjoyed this film more. But you see, this is a mediocre Marvel blockbuster to me. It gave us nothing new except the idea of helping the black people around the world. Let’s say it again: It wasn’t a film, it was a statement. And this is how important statements are today.

Yays and nays

After lengthy introduction, here’s a list of things I loved and hated in the Oscars.

Yay – Cold War: I am truly enjoying the wins of the Cold War. Pawlikowski in the circle of best directors warms my heart. Fingers crossed for at least one statue. I don’t think Kulig should score the best actress nom so it’s no surprise for me here. The level is too high this year.

NayFirst Man: What is happening, Chazelle? The moonwalking movie was a dream but sadly a dream the Academy didn’t dream. Claire Foy should earn something for her acting and Hurwitz for music.

YayFirst Reformed: After so much discrimination, at least one nomination for one of my faves. The best original screenplay is not going to be awarded but it is a win anyway!

NayFirst Reformed: But where the heck is a nom for Ethan Hawke?!

YayAt Eternity’s Gate: Haven’t seen it yet and it is really pissing me off. But Willem Dafoe as Vincent van Gogh is yet another accent nobody expected.

NayBeautiful Boy: Apparently problems with children weren’t as important since none of them got anything. But Timothee Chalamet was worthy yet another chance in this race.

YayA Star Is Born: Thank you, dear Academy, that you answered my prayers and nominated Sam Elliot. I shall not discuss the rest of nominations for A Star Is Born. Apart from the best song, they are just wasted space for better people. Especially in the best director category.

Nay Boy Erased: As mentioned, not important this year. No matter what Joel Edgerton did with his film and how the world answered, Nicole Kidman was worth a nomination. For me, it was really good. Not a masterpiece but a good watch. A little depressing, sure, but the way it supposed.

YayThe Favourite: yes, not the Lanthimos you should expect, but exceptional anyway. If Olivia Colman isn’t scoring her Oscar, I shall be personally offended. Also: the cinematography in this is weirder than I expected. L O V E D it.

NayBlacKKKlansman: However proud I am for all its nominations, the best actor for John David Washington is kind of a snub.

YayChristopher Robin: Say whatever, I loved this film. And they deserved the visual effects nomination. Pooh and friends were damn real.

NayBohemian Rhapsody: You know it all already. Apart from Malek. If it wasn’t for Bale, he’d go straight with the Oscar.

YayInfinity War: For visual effects. Now we’re talking. Thank God there’s no Panther.

Ok, that’s it for the day. I’ve got two films from best picture to watch. Then expect some words about the actual results (and what you should watch).
